Introduction to the case
There have been several instances where polygraph test results are used to confirm a person’s guilt or innocence. People make use of these lie detector tests because they can help in investigations, corroborate evidence, and be useful as evidence in courts. However, the question most people ask is if it is reliable or not. In today’s video, there are 5 instances where criminal defendants were saying the truth but lie detector tests showed that they were lying and this further proves that polygraph tests are not reliable. Let us get into it.
1. Frank Sterling Case
Our first criminal defednat is Frank Sterling and he was wrongly convicted even if he had a strong alibi for the murder of 74-year-old Viola Manville in 1988 because he failed the lie detection test and the detectives who worked on the case obtained a false confession of guilt from him. The actual killer in the case, Mark Christie, passed a polygraph test and went on to commit another murder while Frank Sterling was put in prison. 22 years later, Frank Sterling was exonerated because his innocence was proven.
2. Lee Anthony Evans Case
Another case of polygraph test results setting guilty people free and making the innocent pay for a crime they did not commit is that of Lee Anthony Evans case. In 1978, Lee Evans was the main suspect in the murder of five teens in Newark, New Jersey. But he was cleared as a suspect because he passed the lie detection test. 32 years later, Evans confessed to the crime. Sadly, the victims did not get the justice they deserved because of a polygraph test result.
3. Gary Leon Ridgway Case
Gary Leon Ridgway case is a case of a guilty person walking free because of passing a polygraph test. In 1983, Gary Leon Ridgway known as the “Green River Killer,” was dropped as a murder suspect because he passed a polygraph test. He went on to kill 44 more women before being caught and convicted. Between 1982 and 1998.
4. Charles Cullen Case
The Charles Cullen case shows how unreliable lie detector test results can be. Charles Cullen is known as the “Angel of Death,” and he passed a polygraph test after being suspected of murdering a patient which made him free. He went on to kill several other people before he was caught and convicted for his crimes.
5. Jimmy Williams Case
The fifth person that was wrongly convicted based on a polygraph test result is Jimmy Williams who was convicted of rape when he failed the lie detector test. For 10 years he was incarcerated for a crime he never committed and was only set free because the supposed victim came forward to say that the rape never happened. The reason the lie detector test was admissible was that his attorney was so convinced of his innocence that he stipulated that the results of a polygraph test could be admitted into evidence. When he failed the test, he was convicted and this shows that polygraph tests cannot be solely relied on.
Conclusion
These cases show that polygraph tests or lie detector tests cannot always be relied upon. So, when using lie detector test results to convict or acquit a person, ensure that other evidence can back up the claim of innocence or guilt to be on the safe side.
