Best Process Server Disguises & Costumes for Fooling Unsuspecting Defendants

Oklahoma Judicial Process Servers
and Private Investigators

Our expert team of attorneys and consultants will be glad to provide necessary legal assistance.

Best Process Server Costumes for Fooling Unsuspecting DefendantsProcess serving is a difficult, dangerous, and often thankless profession to work in, and yet without them our current judicial system would ground to a halt. There are not enough deputies to deliver court papers, and only process servers serve documents on weekends, late at night, and in other extremely trying situations that law enforcement lacks the human resources to accomplish. Even process servers must learn some special tricks to find success though, so the best process servers often opt for disguises that help them achieve successful service of process upon even the most difficult of individuals.

Disguises help private investigators and process servers alike go undetected. These disguises require special creativity, and which one they use will depend upon the special circumstances in which they may find themselves. Indeed, a process server disguise is most helpful when serving the following types of individuals:

High Profile/Hard to Access Defendants:

One difficult thing all our experienced Oklahoma process servers at our private detective agency in Midwest City will attest to is that serving higher profile individuals is a definite chore! These individuals often have others “protecting” them, be it butlers, secretaries, security guards at entrances to gated residential communities, or even deputies and other process servers who cover for them and refuse to serve them. These layers of social protection can make serving higher profile defendants much more arduous and taxing for the average process server.

Fortunately, our private detective agency in Piedmont does not employ mere “average” process servers. Instead, we hire in and train only the best process servers to collaborate with us at our private investigation agency. Thus, our legal professionals are adept at going out in costumes and disguises that will aid in successfully serving court papers and other legal documents to people in high society.

Dangerous Defendants:

Dangerous defendants, regardless of whether they have violent criminal histories, require special care from our resolute team at our private investigation agency in OKC. While female process servers might have the best chance at getting lonely, horny men to open the door, if defendants of any gender hate their mothers and female romantic partners or are just dangerous individuals, then sending a female process server to serve them might not be enough.

Disguises can help process servers deliver court papers to these individuals serve documents with higher chances of staying safe, such as delivering a pizza, bringing a package, or dressing up like a mail carrier minus the official logos and handing “mail” to the person. If the person sees us as innocuous and does not realize someone served them until we have sped away from the scene, then all the better!

Evasive Defendants:

Most defendants and respondents do not want to receive the paperwork a sheriff’s deputy or process server tries to bring to them. All such news is unpleasant, bad news that not only does not help the person but often causes them additional harm. There are some circumstances that some people welcome, such as amicable divorce documents where both sides just want to get the divorce over with, but most times no one wants the documents. Someone may be suing them due to a car accident, a bad debt, for full custody of their children, or may be evicting them from their homes.

As such, some defendants will do everything they can to hide from a process server. Indeed, they may engage in some or all the following tactics and strategies to avoid process servers:

Moving Frequently to Avoid Detection:

Some process servers find that some difficult defendants will continuously move from one place to another. Whether it is because they are homeless and suffer from job/economic and housing insecurity or come from toxic, unstable family situations that demand they bounce from place to place, not knowing where they consistently live or work makes serving them especially difficult. Indeed, skip traces often take at least one to several months for a new registered address to show up, and if they constantly move it makes it difficult for even the best process server to successfully locate a missing person with a skip trace service.

Castling Up Inside of Their Offices & Homes:

Castling up inside of a home or office is another classic trick that defendants who are actively avoiding a process server will attempt. Ring and other doorbell cameras have helped exacerbate the problem for process servers near me trying to serve defendants. They can see us coming, and they will just refuse to come out. Our licensed private investigators and process servers in Norman do have ways to counter this tactic though.

Siege serves are one of the best ways to counteract defendants who castle up inside of their homes or offices to avoid process servers. Thus, if disguises do not work, our legal staff will wait down the road as far as possible but close enough to nab the defendant when she/he/they eventually enter(s) or leave(s) the office or residential property. Most people come and go at some point so if our clients can afford to have us wait down the road and then jump out and serve them, it can really help solve some of the most difficult, evasive process serving cases.

Utilizing Post Office Boxes In lieu of Physical Addresses

Some wiser people who are street smart will have the know-how to use post office boxes as their addresses instead of physical addresses whenever possible. Less experienced defendants on the run will get one at the United States Postal Service (USPS), but with the submission of a form our Oklahoma process servers can usually retrieve this information from the postal workers with relative ease.

Smarter evasive defendants will secure a P.O. box at a private company, such as at UPS, because without a subpoena they will not release the associated physical address to a process server or private investigator. Indeed, they might even alert the defendant that a process server or private eye in OKC came looking for that information, especially if an attorney in the case secures a subpoena for the information. This could tip off the defendant who is avoiding getting served, making the legal professional’s job that much more difficult.

Asking Family Members/Co-workers to Hide Them/Lie:

One thing that irks our process servers is when family members and co-workers hide defendants from them. Whether avoiding divorce papers, paternity tests, subpoenas for deposition, small claims affidavits and orders, or some other pressing matter they would rather not receive, having family members, co-workers, and friends willing to help cover for them can make things much more difficult for process servers just wanting to complete their jobs.

Utilizing Google Voice Phones & Unregistered Trac Phones:

Some defendants will utilize special anonymous texting apps and unregistered Trac phones that do not register their numbers or other information back to them. Indeed, if a process server gets hold of their phone numbers, they can use them to help track their social media accounts, call them with a ruse, and trick the into meeting with them, etc.

Using False Cities/States/Countries on Social Media:

Tricky, evasive defendants who have learned how to avoid a process server will want to change the city and state or even country in which they live to somewhere they do not reside on all their social media platforms. To avoid a process server, it is imperative that they make these changes consistent among all their profiles and that they do not post photos of themselves in place where they do live. Indeed, using AI to post photos of themselves in faraway locations can prove beneficial to them. Of course, it will make the life of the process server in Moore who is trying to server them much more difficult.

Changing Their Profile Photos on Social Media to Fake People:

Some sneaky defendants will try to avoid detection by changing their profile photo on Facebook, TikTok, Twitter/X, Instagram, and so on to that of another person. That way if a more experienced process server or attorney knows to check on social media to help find a photo of the person they are trying to serve because the client does not have one, they are less likely to find the right person. Thus, lying to the process server and avoiding detection becomes much easier when they think they are looking for someone who looks very differently.

Living with Someone Else & Paying No Utilities/Phone Bills in Their Names:

Skip tracing only works well when a person does something that triggers an online paper trail that tracks their new location via an extractable registry. Whenever someone takes one or more of the following actions, it has the potential to trigger a new address or phone number for them in a skip trace service:

  • Registers Utilities in Their Name
  • Gets a New Phone Service in Their Name
  • Obtains a Post Office Box at the USPS
  • Registers a New Vehicle in Their Name
  • Obtains a New Driver’s License
  • Pays Taxes
  • Buys a New Home/Property in Their Name
  • Gets a New Credit Card in Their Name
  • Buys a New Vehicle in Their Name

People who do not wish to be found will not do the things above. They will let other people register these things for them, so people will not know where they have moved to. If they do not, then a process server in Tulsa will have a greater chance of successfully serving them with legal documents.

Some defendants who are avoiding subpoenas, small claims affidavits and orders, garnishments, divorce papers, and more will also use ring cameras at their businesses, residences, etc., so they can see who is approaching their residence or office on camera before they risk answering the door. Indeed, whenever one of our process servers in Bethany notices a ring camera next to a door, on a garage, etc., it is too late to hide the papers and their chances of successfully serving someone goes way down.

This is why the best process servers near me will make great efforts to hide the presence of court papers and other legal documents, before getting out of their vehicles. Upon exiting a vehicle, a Ring camera will pick up on the legal documents. By the time they have noticed the Ring camera, it is too late to hide them. Our process servers in Del City are smart and experienced though, so they know how to do this beforehand to help them avoid unnecessary detection.

Fleeing the Country:

Some defendants will go so far as to flee the country to avoid having a process server or sheriff’s deputy serve them with court papers or other legal documents. Our private investigation agency has special ways to help serve these wayward people. These include the following methods:

  • Hague Service Convention
  • Letters Rogatory
  • Foreign Process Servers

Our private detective agency mostly uses option c, because our firm has the best overseas process servers in many countries around the world. So, even if the defendant flees the country, we have an excellent chance of finding them. This is because our process servers in Altus, OK are second to none.

Gullible Defendants:

Process server disguises are also excellent tools for gullible defendants. Whereas these people may not quickly open the door for someone who randomly comes up to their home, less intelligent people with fewer street smarts might succumb to the tricks and ruses of clever process servers who take the time and who have the experience to devise process server disguises.

Defendants Often on the Road:

Defendants on the road are often hard to catch. Whether they are truckers, politicians, traveling salespeople, sportscasters, or other professions which require significant traveling, process serving disguises and ruses can really help locate these difficult people and can trick them into meeting with us. Otherwise, it will be difficult to achieve results for process serving clients who urgently need to get someone served.

Best Process Server Disguises & Costumes for Evasive Defendants:

Over the years, our process servers in Watonga and private investigators in Lawton, OK have devised a list of some of the best costumes and disguises for successful process serving. This list comes from years of experience, education, training, and dedication to the extremely arduous and dangerous legal profession known as process serving. This partial list includes, but is not limited to, the following sneaky disguises and costumes:

Mail Carrier – Without the Official USPS Logo:

Dressing up as a postal worker – without the official logo, of course – is a great way for a process server near me to trick someone into thinking they just received a mail delivery when instead they just got served. The process server can even deliver the documents in a well-taped manila envelope or package. That way by the time they open the documents, the Oklahoma City process server can be long gone and off to their next serve.

It is important not to wear an official governmental logo, so as not to impersonate a governmental official and violate the law. However, there is no law against carrying a mail sack and dressing up in clothing that looks like a United States Postal Worker uniform. However, if appearing similar to a postal worker keeps the process server safe and gets the person served, then all the better!

UPS/FedEx Package Delivery Person:

Many unsuspecting people will happily open the door if they think they have a package. Some of our process servers even call defendants from phone numbers that are less traceable or untraceable and pretend they are with UPS or FedEx. Many defendants will arrange to meet up with our process servers in Chickasha, Oklahoma, with some even giving out their new addresses in case the “UPS” or “FedEx” driver does not have the most current physical residential address to go to.

If the defendant asks whom the package is from, the process server in OKC, OK can simply say she/he/they is/are from a person they can make up a generic, extremely common name for. So, if the person is Hispanic, they could say the package is from “Maria Lopez” and if White, “John Smith.” By making up a name in advance that is quite common, it is less likely to draw suspicion from the defendant.

Pizza Delivery Person:

Who does not like a good pizza now and then? If a pizza delivery person “accidentally” brought a pizza to the house of the owners of our PI agency in OKC, they would take the pizza, tip the driver, and eat it. Defendants get hangry, too, and even if they were people with good morals who would not want to take someone else’s pizza and ruin their dinner, they might be willing to at least see what the toppings were first or might at least step outside to confirm the pizza delivery person does indeed have the wrong house.

Many pizza stores will happily give process servers a spare pizza box for a low price or even for free, if they ask nicely. Oklahoma process servers can also purchase other pizza delivery driver attire online via Amazon or other online stores’ websites. This is a surprisingly inexpensive yet effective costume choice.

DoorDash/Uber Eats Food Delivery Driver:

This type of disguise is easy to wear, because these DoorDash and Uber Eats food delivery drivers do not have specific uniforms. Most just arrive in their cars and carry food to the front door in a bag. A process server in Edmond, OK can easily grab an unused food bag from a local restaurant and fill it with cheap trash for empty food boxes so it looks like there is something inside of it. Then when the defendant answers the door to her/his/their residence, the process server can simply hand the papers or can hide them inside the empty food boxes inside and walk away.

Some online sites even offer special logos for the food delivery drivers’ vehicles’ windshields, and putting one onto their automobiles will add credibility to the process server in OKC’s story of “being” a DoorDash or Uber Eats delivery driver. If the defendant believes the ruse because of this extra planning and skilled execution of the process server costume/disguise, then all the better!

Lyft/Uber Driver:

Lyft and Uber drivers who have “accidentally” gone to the “wrong house” or who are otherwise “lost” and are asking directions due to a malfunctioning GPS device, are a terrific ruse for the most dedicated licensed process servers to use. As with DoorDash and Uber Eats, it is helpful if they can have a special windshield light that identifies them as “Lyft” or “Uber” drivers, because it will help with the storyline and make their deceit more believable. Hopefully, the person of interest (POI) will end up opening the door to see what is going on and might even try to “help” the costumed process server.

Person Looking for a Lost Dog/Cat:

Process servers in Oklahoma who pretend to have lost their dog or cat and who genuinely look scared and sad can sometimes garner empathy even from the most elusive defendants in civil court cases. It is vital that the process server brings some printouts with fake photos of the “missing” dog or cat, as well as a fake name and phone number that leads back to a police department in case they try to call back later. By arriving prepared, process servers near me can increase their chances of eliciting a positive response that draws out the individual from her/his/their home or office and into the clutches of the sneaky Oklahoma process server.

Stranded Individual with Car Trouble:

Being “stranded” on the side of the road is yet another fantastic way for process servers in Broken Arrow to trick defendants into getting served. This is especially useful for siege serves where they must catch the defendant entering or leaving an office or residence, because instead of parking many houses away they can simply put up their hood and pretend they have a mechanical problem that necessitates waiting for “help” to “arrive.” When the defendant eventually comes by, the person may even stop and offer to assist the “distressed” process server.

Even if the POI does not immediately stop and offer aide, at least the process server will be right next to the house and waiting to serve the person as she/he/they enter(s) or leave(s) the property. This disguise garners less suspicion, because “surely” a process server would not get up so close to the house and would not have a mechanical problem, would she/he/they? Well, as it turns out, the best process servers near me will do just that!

Pregnant Side Chick:

Pregnant process servers of any gender can sometimes have success in serving evasive defendants and respondents. They can go up to the front door, and if the person’s wife or girlfriend opens the door, they can pretend to be the knocked-up result of an affair the husband had. This ruse has its pros and cons, but some of our female process servers have used this trick over the years and it can work! You should see how quickly the angry girlfriend or wife will immediately drag her boyfriend or husband to the front door to explain himself, once she gets over the initial shock.

Religious Missionary:

One can often find those well-meaning, young, annoying, misinformed, gullible Mormon men and women riding on their little bicycles out “spreading the word” of a fake god that no one has ever seen and whose religious founder found himself convicted of fraud. Nonetheless, dressing up as a missionary of any flavor or religion can sometimes get equally naïve people to open the door, if only to smile, nod, and wish them well. Others who are atheists might even open the door so they can turn the water hose on them to scare them away. Whatever the case, if dressing up as someone who has come to spread religious beliefs gets defendants and respondents to open the door so a process server in Nichols Hills, OK can serve them, then all the better!

Nuns/Priests/Bishops/Cardinals:

Costumes and nuns, priests, bishops, and cardinals can open many doors, when serving both clergy and non-clergy alike. This is especially true in states like Oklahoma and other deeply religious, ignorant, uneducated communities who will believe anything and everything with zero proof whatsoever. Thus, when a defendant needs to serve a pedophile priest with a lawsuit, what better disguise for a sneaky process server than to disguise oneself as a visiting cardinal who has traveled down to “address” the situation by leading from the rear?
