In today’s video we will be delving into an interesting topic. It is the controversies surrounding Oklahoma Governor John Kevin Stitt and State Superintendent Ryan Walters. The policies that they have put in place have been claimed or alleged by the public to harm marginalized communities, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, women, non-Christians, people of color, immigrants, and others. Before delaying any further, let us get right into it.
Attacks on the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community
2SLGBTQIA+ stands for Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and more. ‘Two-Spirit’ is a term used by some Indigenous peoples to describe a gender role outside the binary. It recognizes a deep spiritual and cultural identity that many people may be unfamiliar with. Ryan Walters and Governor Stitt have, in their administration, managed to support laws that ban gender-affirming care for minors, restrict discussions about gender identity in schools, and endorse book bans targeting LGBTQ+ literature. Stitt has also banned gender-transitioning which has affected transgender people. These actions not only suppress identity but also increase risks of mental health struggles and discrimination in the community, which is bad. Everyone deserves better.
War on Women’s Rights
If there is one thing that the Governor Stitt administration has managed to do, it is neglecting women’s rights. There are abortion bans which means that a woman has no autonomy over her body. Even when a woman is pregnant because of incest or rape, they do not have the option of removing the fetus because these laws criminalize healthcare providers. Some women have been forced to travel out of the state when they want to access basic healthcare which can be a hassle. It has also disproportionately affected low-income women.
Hostility Toward Non-Christians
There is a lack of religious freedom in Oklahoma because Governor Stitt and Walters have promoted Christian nationalism. In public schools, Walters has openly endorsed prayer. There are also Christian-centric curricula that have managed to alienate non-Christian students and families. There are other religions that people practice like Muslims, Hindus, Judaism, etc. There are also some atheist people. When policies are put in place to enforce Christian beliefs it creates an exclusionary environment.
Policies That Harm Non-White Communities
When it comes to Governor Stitt’s administration in Oklahoma, his administration is criticized because of the prevalent, systemic race issue. His policies have also disproportionately harmed Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. His policies have erased marginalized histories, promoted inequality, and undermined Indigenous sovereignty.
Anti-Immigrant Policies
In Oklahoma, Governor Stitt has managed to enact policies that make life hard for immigrants. Access to education for undocumented families is restricted and even housing too. Ryan Walters has also supported measures to limit Spanish-language resources in schools, citing ‘assimilation’ as his priority with the actions of Walters and Stitt it is difficult for immigrant communities to be fully immersed in the community instead they are isolated. The chances of them even succeeding in life is limited.
Marginalizing Vulnerable Communities Through Education
Ryan Walters has managed to turn the educational system in Oklahoma into a battleground. People feel that his policies have managed to promote a narrow Eurocentric view of the world which should not be so, ban some books, and erase marginalized histories. The reason why the public is uncomfortable with it is that education aims to educate people and empower them and not to exclude certain information from students. But, with the action of Walters, students are not allowed to have different perspectives of things because of the limited knowledge they are exposed to and this in turn diminishes their ability to engage with the world critically.
